In the country where I grew up, a deep-rooted expression exists that refers to the immutable circumstances set by the government; colloquially known as "tightening the screws”.
Online, the phrase is defined as an idiom referring to the implementation of tougher demands and the use of high-pressure tactics. According to this principle, the mechanisms of democratic society become ineffective and the actions of the ruling authorities leave ordinary citizens in an unwelcome position, which cannot be easily fixed by the constant tightening of control exercised by the current regime.
